The aging population of America is the most significant public challenge of the coming century. The number of adults 65 years of age and over is expected to double in the next 20 to 30 years. However, living longer can also mean more physical, mental and emotional hardships. Depression, as well as anxiety, dementia and general medical concerns area common among older adults. The elderly population is at a higher risk for mental health problems due to loss of a loved one, life transitions and health challenges. Geriatric mental health problems are often overlooked, misdiagnosed or mistreated. Family, friends and the older adults themselves, wrongly accept the signs of mental health difficulties and symptoms as normal consequences of aging or they consider these problems unresponsive to treatment.
Our Geriatric Psychiatry program focuses on assessment and stabilization of the elderly individual experiencing behavioral or psychological dysfunction. The average length of stay for this program is 15-20 days but is individualized to meet the needs of each person. Our medical team will conduct extensive neuropsychological assessments of cognitive and behavioral states. This will allow the treatment team to accurately diagnose and develop individualized care protocols specific to the patient’s needs.
A psychiatrist experienced in the needs and challenges of the geriatric population, leads the caring and compassionate Rolling Hills Hospital staff. Others involved with the patient’s individualized treatment program may include psychologists, nurses, licensed therapists, social workers, certified nurse aids, mental health technicians, recreational therapists and other health care professionals within the hospital setting. Each member of the health care team is highly trained and experienced in the care of seniors. The treatment team incorporates co-existing medical diagnoses such as arthritis, hypertension, cardiovascular conditions and other diseases into the treatment plan.
