How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for alcohol addiction

Determining whether or not someone has developed a drinking problem can be difficult due to the fact that drinking alcohol is an accepted and commonly enjoyed activity for people over the age of 21. It is also not uncommon for adolescents to experiment with drinking alcohol, so it can be difficult to determine when that experimentation has crossed the line into becoming a true problem. If you suspect that your family member or loved one may be abusing alcohol, the following are some warning signs to look out for:

  • Chronically absent from work or school
  • Declining academic or occupational performance
  • Isolating oneself from family and friends
  • Finding alcohol hidden in various places around the house
  • Experiencing memory lapses
  • Acting out in sudden, seemingly unprovoked angry and aggressive outbursts
  • Drastic mood swings
  • Constantly smelling like alcohol
  • Failing to go a day without drinking

If you have noticed any of these signs in your loved one, it would be extremely beneficial to consult with a mental health professional in order to determine the severity of your loved one’s problem. Anticipate that your loved one will be hesitant to receiving treatment, and will likely become defensive, or even hostile, when confronted with the idea of doing so. Remain calmly persistent so that your loved one knows that you are not going to give up on him or her.

Why Consider Alcohol Treatment

Why consider treatment for alcohol addiction at Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, OK

Developing an addiction to alcohol can quickly cause an individual’s life to seem like it is spiraling out of control. The ramifications of chronic, excessive alcohol use can be detrimental not only for the individual, but for those in his or her life as well. Alcohol abuse can result in marital discord, struggles within other important relationships, academic failure, job loss, and financial turmoil, amongst countless others. But this devastating cycle can be stopped.

A rehab clinic can be one of the most beneficial options for beginning the process of recovering from alcohol addiction and dependence. By entering into a treatment clinic, individuals are immediately entering a safe and secure environment where they not only lack access to alcohol, but are also afforded a chance to step away from the stresses of their everyday lives that may act as triggers for the alcohol use. In this comfortable and nurturing environment, individuals can participate in medical detoxification, during which their bodies become rid of all alcohol as well as any other toxins that may be present. Once this process has been successfully completed, various intensive therapeutic interventions can be implemented as the recovery process truly begins. With the support of mental health professionals and other patients who are struggling with similar challenges, rehab clinics can help people as they successfully embark on the path to a happy, sober life.

Types of Treatment

Types of Alcohol Addiction Treatment Offered at Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, OK

At Rolling Hills Hospital, we maintain a treatment team of professionals who are dedicated to providing high-quality care to each and every person that comes to us. All treatment regimens are individualized to meet each patient’s particular needs and are stated in measurable terms within the patient’s treatment plan. Most of our services use a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy, but our various options also offer additional therapeutic interventions in order to meet ongoing needs. Your specific concerns will determine which treatment option you will receive and what types of therapies will be implemented. The following are some therapeutic treatment methods that may be included your treatment plan:

Medical detoxification: For those patients that come to us chemically dependent on drugs or alcohol, they will begin the treatment process by completing detox. Detoxification is the process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins within the body. Throughout this process, the body is able to heal itself and return to normal functioning. At Rolling Hills, our detox program focuses on the safe withdrawal from alcohol and other substances while encompassing structured clinical services.

Medication management: At Rolling Hills, each one of our patients sees our psychiatrist at least three times a week for evaluation and medication management. All patients will be thoroughly evaluated and monitored throughout the course of treatment. In many instances, medication is used in the detox process in order to help control some of the unpleasant symptoms that may arise, while also helping to alleviate the negative symptoms of any underlying mental health disorders that may be present.

Individual therapy: All of our patients engage in individual therapy on a weekly basis, at least two hours a week for adolescents and at least once hour per week for patients on all of our other units. During individual therapy, patients can take the time to delve deeper into the root cause for why they started abusing substances, while also addressing maladaptive thought patterns and setting their own goals for treatment.

Group therapy: Here at Rolling Hills, we offer a number of different process and expressive groups on a weekly basis. Topics will vary some depending upon the unit that a person is in. However, some of the topics covered may include coping skills, anger management, life skills, and managing mental illness. Those in our chemical dependency program will also discuss topics related to substance abuse and addiction.

Family therapy: Family therapy is an important part of the treatment process and is held at least once a week for each one of our patients. For the adolescent unit, family sessions must be held in person with a licensed therapist. Additionally, the parents and caregivers of our adolescent patients are encouraged to attend regular treatment meetings and are able to call and check on their child on a regular basis.

In addition to these therapeutic methods, Rolling Hills Hospital also provides a number of other services that one may participate in during his or her stay with us. Such additional services may include, but are not limited to:

  • Recreational therapy
  • Expressive therapies (including art, music, pet therapy, and tai chi)
  • Daily school
  • Emotions anonymous
