Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment

If you have a family member or loved one who is fighting the battle of an addiction to meth, you are likely experiencing an array of emotions. You may be feeling heartbroken as you watch your loved one’s life crumbling around him or her. You may be feeling angry at the fact that your loved one continues to use a drug that can be so blatantly damaging to his or her health. And you may be feeling extremely worried about what your loved one’s future holds if he or she does not receive the help that he or she so desperately needs. While you know that an intervention needs to be made, you may be feeling nervous or apprehensive as to how you should go about confronting your loved one. Here are some things to keep in mind during this troubling time:

  • Educate yourself on the disease of addiction. Not only will this allow you to better recognize signs that your loved one is using, but it will also help you gain an understanding of why your loved one continues to participate in such dangerous behaviors, allowing you to develop a sense of empathy towards what he or she is going through.
  • Do not take it upon yourself to throw away or hide any drugs that you may find in your loved one’s possession. While this can seem like an easy solution, it will only serve to anger your loved one and he or she will likely just go get more of the drug.
  • Enlist the support of other people in your loved one’s life so that you can approach him or her as a unit, all demonstrating how much you care about his or her well-being.
  • Refrain from lecturing your loved one because he or she is more than likely already well aware of the damage that is being inflicted on his or her body by using this substance.
  • Anticipate denial, anger, defensiveness, and hostility. Do not allow such reactions to intimidate you and cause you to step away from the situation.
  • Research various treatment options and present your loved one with your findings. Work together to discover which option will best meet his or her needs.
  • Remain unconditionally supportive throughout the entire process. Even once treatment has begun, the road to recovery can be a long one with many setbacks. Not giving up on your loved one will help him or her to not give up on him or herself.

Why Consider Treatment at Rolling Hills Hospital

Due to the damaging physical and mental health effects that using meth can inflict upon a person, rehab clinics are often the best choice for getting an individual the thorough and intensive care that he or she needs. By taking part in this type of treatment, individuals are first and foremost able to step away from their normal, everyday environment, freeing them from the temptation to use as well as the ability to use. In this environment, individuals who are addicted to methamphetamines can begin the healing process by first going through a medical detox where any and all toxic substances will be safely removed from their bodies. Once this process is complete, a number of therapeutic interventions will be implemented in order to help them learn about addiction, develop the skills needed to overcome their addiction, and learn tools to prevent relapse. Additionally, along with the support of mental health professionals, individuals who take part in rehab treatment are also afforded the opportunity to work with and gain support from other patients who are facing similar challenges. In this safe, secure, and confidential environment, people can take the first step towards a future free from the grips of addiction.

Types of Treatment Offered at Rolling Hills Hospital

At Rolling Hills Hospital, we maintain a treatment team of professionals who are dedicated to providing high-quality care to each and every person that comes to us. All treatment regimens are individualized to meet each patient’s particular needs and are stated in measurable terms within the patient’s treatment plan. Most of our services use a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy, but our various options also offer additional therapeutic interventions in order to meet ongoing needs. Your specific concerns will determine which kind of treatment you will receive and what types of therapies will be implemented. The following are some therapeutic treatment methods that may be included your treatment plan:

Medical detoxification: Those patients that come to us chemically dependent on drugs or alcohol will begin the treatment process by completing detox. Detoxification is the process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins within the body. Throughout this process, the body is able to heal itself and return to normal functioning. At Rolling Hills’ rehab clinic, our detox program focuses on the safe withdrawal from alcohol and other substances while encompassing structured clinical services.

Medication management: At Rolling Hills, each one of our patients sees our psychiatrist at least three times a week for evaluation and medication management. All patients will be thoroughly evaluated and monitored throughout the course of treatment. In many instances, medication is used in the detox process in order to help control some of the unpleasant symptoms that may arise, while also helping to alleviate the negative symptoms of any underlying mental health disorders that may be present.

Individual therapy: All of our patients engage in individual therapy on a weekly basis, at least two hours a week for adolescents and at least one hour per week for patients on all of our other units. During individual therapy, patients can take the time to delve deeper into the root cause for why they started abusing substances, while also addressing maladaptive thought patterns and setting their own goals for treatment.

Group therapy: Here at Rolling Hills, we offer a number of different process and expressive groups on a weekly basis. Topics will vary some depending upon the unit that a person is in. However, some of the topics covered may include coping skills, anger management, life skills, and managing mental illness. Those in our chemical dependency program will also discuss topics related to substance abuse and addiction.

Family therapy: Family therapy is an important part of the treatment process and is held at least once a week for each one of our patients. For the adolescent unit, family sessions must be held in person with a licensed therapist. Additionally, the parents and caregivers of our adolescent patients are encouraged to attend regular treatment meetings and are able to call and check on their child on a regular basis.

In addition to these therapeutic methods, Rolling Hills Hospital also provides a number of other services that one may participate in during his or her stay with us. Such additional services may include, but are not limited to:

  • Recreational therapy
  • Expressive therapies (including art, music, pet therapy, and tai chi)
  • Daily school
  • Emotions anonymous
If you feel that you are in crisis, or are having thoughts about hurting yourself or others, please call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Continued Care and Levels of Treatment

At Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, OK, discharge planning begins at the time of admission and is continuously reevaluated throughout the patient’s stay in order to help ensure a smooth transition when his or her time with us has come to an end. All discharge plans will be discussed at least once a week with family members, the rehab clinics where patients have come from, and with the patients themselves. When you are ready to transition to the next level of care, we will do everything we can to make sure the appropriate plans are put in place to ensure full, successful continuity of care. Additionally, we are able to provide you with necessary referrals to step-down treatment options and outpatient services that will be of most help for meeting your continued needs.
