How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for synthetic marijuana abuse

If you have a family member or loved one who is using synthetic marijuana, you are likely feeling extremely concerned about the impact that it is having on his or her life. This potent substance can lead to altered states of perception, psychosis, and severe health complications, amongst countless other negative consequences. Once people have started using this substance, they may experience difficulty putting an end to their use. This is why it is imperative that, if you have a loved one who is using this deadly drug, you step in and get him or her the help that he or she needs. However, approaching your loved one about his or her need for treatment can be intimidating. Here are some tips to keep in mind when confronting your loved one:

  • Learn as much as you can about synthetic marijuana. By doing so, you will be able to better recognize the warning signs that someone may be using, as well as gauge the severity of the use.
  • Present your loved one with your concerns. Provide specific examples of things have caused you concern.
  • Anticipate denial, defensiveness, and possible anger. More than likely, your loved one will not immediately admit to using the drug, but try to remain patient and do not return the anger that is directed at you.
  • Take your loved one to get a thorough physical examination by a medical professional in order to determine if the drug has already caused damage to his or her physical health.
  • Research treatment options and present your findings to your loved one.
  • Remain unconditionally supportive throughout the treatment process, recognizing that recovery does not happen overnight.

Types of Treatment

Types of synthetic marijuana abuse treatment offered at Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, OK

At Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, we maintain a treatment team of professionals who are dedicated to providing high-quality care to each and every person that comes to us. All treatment regimens are individualized to meet each patient’s particular needs and are stated in measurable terms within the patient’s treatment plan. Most of our services use a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy, but our various treatment options also offer additional therapeutic interventions in order to meet ongoing needs. Your specific concerns will determine which treatment services you receive and what types of therapies will be implemented. The following are some therapeutic treatment methods that may be included your treatment plan:

Medical detoxification: Those patients that come to us chemically dependent on drugs or alcohol will begin the treatment process by completing detox. Detoxification is the process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins within the body. Throughout this process, the body is able to heal itself and return to normal functioning. At Rolling Hills, our detox program focuses on the safe withdrawal from alcohol and other substances while encompassing structured clinical services.

Medication management: At Rolling Hills, each one of our patients sees our psychiatrist at least three times a week for evaluation and medication management. All patients will be thoroughly evaluated and monitored throughout the course of treatment. In many instances, medication is used in the detox process in order to help control some of the unpleasant symptoms that may arise, while also helping to alleviate the negative symptoms of any underlying mental health disorders that may be present.

Individual therapy: All of our patients engage in individual therapy on a weekly basis, at least two hours a week for adolescents and at least one hour per week for patients on all of our other units. During individual therapy, patients can take the time to delve deeper into the root cause for why they started abusing synthetic marijuana, while also addressing maladaptive thought patterns and setting their own goals for treatment.

Group therapy: Here at Rolling Hills, we offer a number of different process and expressive groups on a weekly basis. Topics will vary some depending upon the unit that a person is in. However, some of the topics covered may include coping skills, anger management, life skills, and managing mental illness. Those in our chemical dependency program will also discuss topics related to substance abuse and addiction.

Family therapy: Family therapy is an important part of the treatment process and is held at least once a week for each one of our patients. For the adolescent unit, family sessions must be held in person with a licensed therapist. Additionally, the parents and caregivers of our adolescent patients are encouraged to attend regular treatment meetings and are able to call and check on their child on a regular basis.

In addition to these therapeutic methods, Rolling Hills Hospital also provides a number of other services that one may participate in during his or her stay with us. Such additional services may include, but are not limited to:

  • Recreational therapy
  • Expressive therapies (including art, music, pet therapy, and tai chi)
  • Daily school
  • Emotions anonymous

When you are ready to transition to the next level of care, we will do everything we can to make sure the appropriate plans are put in place to ensure full, successful continuity of care. Additionally, we are able to provide you with necessary referrals to step-down treatment options and outpatient services that will be of most help for meeting your continued needs.
