How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for depression

If you have someone close to you that is struggling with depression, providing them some sort of care is essential to not only their health but yours as well. This can be as simple as providing them with words of encouragement, listening to what they have to say, and suggesting they seek professional help. Take the time to talk to your loved on about his or her depression in a nonjudgmental way. Offer to make an appointment for them with the family doctor or with a mental health professional and offer to go with them. It is also important to remember that depression is not anyone’s fault. You are not to blame and it is not something your loved one is doing on purpose. Once your loved one has started treatment it is important that you stay involved in the treatment process because they will need your ongoing support. Finally, make sure that you take care of yourself because caring for a loved one can be both mentally and physically exhausting. If you don’t stay in good health, you will not be any help to your loved one.

Types of Treatment

Types of depression treatment offered at Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, OK

At Rolling Hills’ treatment center, we maintain a treatment team of professionals all of whom are dedicated to providing high-quality care to each and every person that comes to us. All treatment regimens are individualized to meet the patient’s particular needs and stated in measurable terms within the patient’s treatment plan. Most of our services use a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy, but our various treatment options tend to have additional, consistent needs. Your specific needs will determine which unit you will be placed in. The following are some therapeutic treatment methods that may be part of your treatment plan.

Medication management: At Rolling Hills, each one of our patients sees our psychiatrist at least three times a week for evaluation and medication management. All patients will be thoroughly evaluated and monitored throughout the course of treatment. In the case of depression, medication comes in the form of antidepressants. The goal of antidepressant medication is to help stabilize and normalize the neurotransmitters in the brain that play a large role in regulating mood.

Individual therapy: All of our patients engage in individual therapy on a weekly basis, at least two hours a week for adolescents and at least once a week for all other units. During individual therapy, patients can begin to alter negative thinking patterns and behaviors that may be exacerbating the depression.

Group therapy: Here at Rolling Hills we offer a number of different process and expressive groups on a weekly basis. Topics will vary some depending upon the unit that is a person is in. However, some of the topics offered on each unit may include: coping skills, anger management, life skills, and managing mental illness.

Family therapy: Family therapy is an important part of the treatment process and is held at least once a week for each one of our patients. For the adolescent unit, family sessions must be held in person with a licensed therapist. Additionally, parents are encouraged to attend regular treatment meetings and can call to check on their child on a regular basis.

In addition to these therapeutic methods, Rolling Hills provides a number of other services that you may participate in during your stay with us. These include:

  • Recreation therapy
  • Expressive therapies (art, music, pet therapy, tai chi)
  • Daily school
  • Emotions anonymous
