Finding out that a family member or loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is nothing short of devastating. The various emotions that you may be feeling can be understandably overwhelming. But knowing what to expect and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead can help make the process seem less intimidating. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you take the first steps towards getting your loved one the help that he or she needs:

  • Educate yourself about Alzheimer’s disease. The greater the understanding that you have regarding the ins and outs of this illness can help make each step of your loved one’s treatment process go more smoothly and feel less overwhelming.
  • Research various treatment options and explore your findings with your loved one. Allow him or her to be an active part of the research process because the more involved your loved one is, the more comfortable he or she is likely to be.
  • Develop daily routines for your loved one that promote consistency. Such routines can help your loved one thrive and will aid in maintaining positive cognition for greater lengths of time.
  • Work with your loved on various tasks that boost memory.
  • Seek guidance from, and adhere to advice provided by, the mental health professionals who begin working with your loved one.
  • Once your loved one has begun treatment, remain an active part of the therapeutic process as your involvement will help promote the most optimal treatment outcomes.
  • Seek additional support from other individuals in your loved one’s life. Taking care of a loved one can be time-consuming and stress-inducing. Having the support of others will allow you to have time for yourself.
  • Consider long-term care and research various options that allow for such.
  • Decide who will be in charge of making the healthcare and financial decisions for your loved one once he or she is no longer able to.

Types of Treatment

Types of Alzheimer’s disease treatment offered at Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, OK

At Rolling Hills’s treatment clinic, we maintain a treatment team of professionals dedicated to providing high-quality care to each and every person who comes to us. All treatment regimens are individualized to meet each patient’s particular needs and are stated in measurable terms within the patient’s treatment plan. Most of our treatment services use a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy, but our various treatment options also offer additional therapeutic interventions in order to meet ongoing needs. For our geriatric care unit, therapy focuses more on orientation therapy and remembrance therapy as many of our older population suffers from dementia or confusion problems. Additional methods that may be included as part of your treatment plan can include:

Medication management: At Rolling Hills, each one of our patients sees our psychiatrist, who is experienced in treating the needs and addressing the challenges that are unique to older adults, at least three times a week for evaluation and medication management. All patients will be thoroughly evaluated and monitored throughout the course of treatment. Additionally, we work closely with the local hospital and, if needed, patients can be transferred there for medical care.

Individual therapy: All of our patients engage in individual therapy on a weekly basis. These sessions are held on a one-to-one basis with patients and their therapist and occur at least one hour per week. Additional sessions can be added as needed or requested.

Group therapy: Here at Rolling Hills, we offer a number of different process and expressive groups on a weekly basis. Each morning, those in our geriatric care unit start the day with an orientation group and then participate in other groups throughout the day that may cover topics such as confusion, aggression, and coping skills.

Family therapy: Family therapy is an important part of the treatment process and is held at least once a week for each one of our patients. Additionally, family members are encouraged to attend regular treatment meetings.

In addition to these therapeutic methods, Rolling Hills Hospital also provides a number of other services that patients may participate in during their stay with us. Such services include:

  • Recreational therapy
  • Expressive therapies (including art, music, pet therapy, and tai chi)
  • Emotions anonymous

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease

At Rolling Hills Hospital, discharge planning begins at the time of admission and is continuously reevaluated throughout the patient’s stay in order to help ensure a smooth transition when his or her stay with us has come to an end. All discharge plans will be discussed at least once a week with family members, the centers where patients have come from, and with patients themselves. When you are ready to transition to the next level of care, we will do everything we can to make sure the appropriate plans are put in place to ensure full, successful continuity of care. In instances where an older adult will need a new placement upon leaving Rolling Hills, we will work closely with the patient and the family to determine the most appropriate placement for meeting his or her current needs. We know that this can be a difficult process and we are here to help you in any way we can.

So thankful to have made some great friends at Rolling Hills who could understand what I was going through.
